[1] However, <a class=\"ew-link\" data-url=\"\/aejjzul\" href=\"\/aejjzul\/body-language\" target=\"_blank\">body language<\/a> does not convey 93 percent of your message.<\/p><p>Engage your audience through gestures, facial expressions and tone of voice, but remember to use clear language to get your message across.<\/p><p><strong>Myth #2<\/strong>: Crossed arms indicate resistance.<\/p><p>Crossed arms can signal resistance, but they can also mean many other things, or even nothing at all.<\/p><p><strong>Myth #3<\/strong>: Sandwiching bad news between two pieces of good news will make it more palatable.<\/p><p>People can usually tell when this technique is being used, and it leaves them feeling manipulated.<\/p><p>When <a class=\"ew-link\" data-url=\"\/community\/pages\/article\/newTMM_98.php\" href=\"\/community\/pages\/article\/newTMM_98.php\" target=\"_blank\">delivering feedback<\/a>, use language that is constructive and objective. Don&#8217;t muddy the waters by sandwiching it between two slices of &#8220;good news.&#8221;<\/p><p><strong>Myth #4<\/strong>: Eye direction is correlated with lying.<\/p><p><a class=\"ew-link\" data-url=\"\/community\/pages\/article\/Neuro_Linguistic_Programming.php\" href=\"\/community\/pages\/article\/Neuro_Linguistic_Programming.php\" target=\"_blank\">Neuro-Linguistic Programming<\/a> suggests that looking up and to the right is a sign of deceit.<\/p><p>However, an Edinburgh University study found no correlation between eye direction and lying or truth-telling. [2] True signs of tall tales: hesitation, fidgeting, and avoiding self-reference.<\/p><p>&#8220;I seem to have left my wallet in my car. Could you put this on my tab and my driver will return to settle up later?&#8221;<\/p><p><strong>Myth #5<\/strong>: More communication is always better.<\/p><p>&#8220;In fact, why don&#8217;t I write you a check?&#8221;<\/p><p>The quality of your communication is far more important than the quantity.<\/p><p><strong>Myth #6<\/strong>: You need to have an open-door policy for your team.<\/p><p>This may sound like a good idea, but it can prevent you from getting things done.<\/p><p>Instead, try scheduling a particular time each week when your team members know you&#8217;re free for a meeting.<\/p><div class=\"ew-note\" data-type=\"neutral\"><div class=\"ew-note-body\"><p><strong>Reflective questions<\/strong>:<\/p><p>After watching the video, you may like to reflect on what you&#8217;ve learned by answering the following questions:<\/p><ul><li> Do you use clear, unambiguous language when communicating an idea to your team?<br\/> <\/li><li> Could you make better use of gestures and tone of voice to engage your audience?<br\/> <\/li><li> How effective are you when it comes to delivering feedback? What can you do to make sure that your feedback is constructive and leads to performance improvements?<br\/> <\/li><li> What could you do to improve communication with your team?
