It&#8217;s as true in business as anywhere else.<\/p><p>When it comes to tackling the challenges that you face every day, it can be a great help to be able to draw on a network of supportive individuals \u2013 people who you can work with to exchange ideas, to find solutions, or to stand by you in difficult times. In short, you need allies.<\/p><p>In this article, we explore how to identify, build and cultivate potential allies.<\/p><div class=\"ew-video\" data-videosource=\"embed\"><div class=\"ew-video-embed\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" frameborder=\"0\" height=\"360\" scrolling=\"auto\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn.jwplayer.com\/players\/ic5kPKwE-5WSyalpf.html\" title=\"JW video player\" width=\"640\"><\/iframe><\/div><\/div><p>Are you dedicating enough time to nurturing your work alliances?<\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What Is an Ally?<\/h2>\n\n<p>Allies are people who offer one another backing, assistance, advice, information, protection, and even friendship. They <a class=\"ew-link\" data-url=\"\/aq7473c\" href=\"\/aq7473c\/how-to-get-the-best-from-an-extra-miler\" target=\"_blank\">go the extra mile<\/a> to help out.<\/p><p>Strong and mutually beneficial alliances can help each party to survive and to thrive, and to get things done more quickly and smoothly than if they were to go it alone.<\/p><p>For example, if you&#8217;re behind schedule and about to miss an important deadline, you could avoid damaging your reputation, or that of your organization, if you had allies to call on to lend a hand.<\/p><p>And knowing that there are people who&#8217;ve &#8220;got your back&#8221; can reduce stress, boost your confidence and <a class=\"ew-link\" data-url=\"\/ao310a2\" href=\"\/ao310a2\/developing-resilience\" target=\"_blank\">resilience<\/a>, and encourage rapport and <a class=\"ew-link\" data-url=\"\/ayt0s3r\" href=\"\/ayt0s3r\/how-to-collaborate-successfully\" target=\"_blank\">collaboration<\/a>.<\/p><div class=\"ew-note\" data-type=\"neutral\"><div class=\"ew-note-body\">\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Note 1:<\/h4>\n\n<p>Allies are not the same as <a class=\"ew-link\" data-url=\"\/at2o1co\" href=\"\/at2o1co\/what-is-stakeholder-management\" target=\"_blank\">stakeholders<\/a>, who are people with an interest in the work that you do, and with the ability to help or hinder it. Relationships with stakeholders tend to be more functional than with your allies.<\/p><p>Allies also differ from coaches and <a class=\"ew-link\" data-url=\"\/community\/pages\/article\/newCDV_72.php\" href=\"\/community\/pages\/article\/newCDV_72.php\" target=\"_blank\">mentors<\/a>, whose main concern is to assist you in developing new skills. However, coaches, mentors and stakeholders can be allies, too.<\/p><\/div><\/div><div class=\"ew-note\" data-type=\"neutral\"><div class=\"ew-note-body\">\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Note 2:<\/h4>\n\n<p>In this article, we use the word &#8220;ally&#8221; in its positive sense. We&#8217;re not recommending that you engage in negative <a class=\"ew-link\" data-url=\"\/amc87k5\" href=\"\/amc87k5\/7-ways-to-use-office-politics-positively\" target=\"_blank\">office politics<\/a> or game-play to circumvent proper channels, or to exclude anyone by creating a clique. It is clearly wrong to build alliances in order to behave in this way.<\/p><\/div><\/div>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Where to Find Allies<\/h2>\n\n<p>Who could your allies be? Are they simply your teammates and your manager? Actually, your list of potential allies goes much further than this. There&#8217;s a range of people to whom you can offer your support, and who may be happy to reciprocate.<\/p><p>Some alliances form naturally: you bond because you share an interest, goal or concern. For example, the senior colleague who offers an invaluable voice of experience, the team member who acts as a sounding board for your ideas, and the supplier who consistently delivers on time. These people are your natural allies.<\/p><p>In fact, anyone who could help you to achieve your objectives is a potential ally: Katerina in the next department, who collates an extra report for you; Ezra on the fourth floor, who tells you when the boss is in a good mood; or an <a class=\"ew-link\" data-url=\"\/community\/pages\/article\/employee-resource-groups.php\" href=\"\/community\/pages\/article\/employee-resource-groups.php\" target=\"_blank\">Employee Resource Group<\/a>, whose members encourage you and build support for your ideas.<\/p><p>Take a look at table 1 for some more suggestions. So you need to invest in <a class=\"ew-link\" data-url=\"\/aryi3ts\" href=\"\/aryi3ts\/how-to-make-high-quality-connections\" target=\"_blank\">high-quality connections<\/a>.<\/p><p>Here are five tips that you can follow to build alliances:<\/p><p><strong>1. Be supportive.<\/strong> Start by offering your support to others when you can see that they need it. And if you&#8217;re not sure what they need \u2013 ask them. The more openness, support and positivity that you offer, the more likely they will lend you theirs.<\/p><p><strong>2. Nurture your allies.<\/strong> One good deed, though, won&#8217;t be enough to form an alliance. Alliances need nurturing, so engage with potential and actual allies regularly. This will keep those connections in a healthy state of readiness.<\/p><p><strong>3. Communicate effectively. <\/strong>Open and timely communication is vital for any relationship to flourish, but especially if you have divided or conflicting loyalties. Don&#8217;t ask for too much.<\/strong> It&#8217;s important to be realistic about the level of support you expect. Your allies will want to help you as much as they can, but this doesn&#8217;t mean that they are always available. Remember, they have to manage their own roles, tasks and priorities \u2013 and, to them, those priorities may be higher than yours!<\/p><p><strong>5. Don&#8217;t take offense.<\/strong> When you or your allies occasionally have to <a class=\"ew-link\" data-url=\"\/aksps8d\" href=\"\/aksps8d\/yes-to-the-person-no-to-the-task\" target=\"_blank\">say &amp;quot;No&amp;quot;<\/a> to one another, remember the trust that you have built together. Be sure not to &#8220;burn your bridges&#8221; by retaliating, such as by withholding support in future. Instead, <a class=\"ew-link\" data-url=\"\/ajh8pyd\" href=\"\/ajh8pyd\/win-win-negotiation\" target=\"_blank\">negotiate<\/a> a compromise, or seek support from elsewhere.<\/p><div class=\"ew-note\" data-type=\"neutral\"><div class=\"ew-note-body\">\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Tip:<\/h4>\n\n<p>You might fear networking or simply lack experience. Having &#8220;someone in your corner&#8221; can boost your confidence, strengthen your resilience, and brighten your day.<\/p><p>You can find allies almost anywhere you look, within the workplace and beyond it. But it takes consistent effort to create and maintain such connections.<\/p><p>The strongest alliances are built on mutual trust and respect, so you need to be willing to support other people, and to accept that they won&#8217;t always be able to help you.<\/p><p>Be sure not to exclude others from your networks, or to exploit the support you&#8217;ve gained.
