In reality, it\u2019s a skillset that you can learn, practice and refine.<\/p><p>At its core, executive presence comes down to five key areas:<\/p><ol class=\"wp-block-list\" type=\"1\"><li><strong>How you communicate<\/strong>: speaking clearly and confidently, in a way that makes people listen.<\/li><li><strong>How you carry yourself<\/strong>: using body language, eye contact and presence to command attention.<\/li><li><strong>How you handle pressure<\/strong>: staying cool, calm and collected, even in high-pressure moments.<\/li><li><strong>How visible you are<\/strong>: ensuring that your contributions are seen, heard and recognized.<\/li><li><strong>How you connect with others<\/strong>: building relationships that strengthen your influence.<\/li><\/ol><p>For women, building executive presence comes with added challenges. Leadership has long been seen as a masculine trait, so qualities like assertiveness and directness are more readily accepted in men.<\/p><p>But women can and do benefit from developing executive presence. A widely cited study found that it accounts for 26 percent of what it takes to get promoted to leadership positions. [1]<\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">5 Top Tips for Building Executive presence<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>1. How You Communicate<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n<p>Women\u2019s voices are spoken over more often \u2013 39 percent of women say they\u2019re frequently interrupted, compared to 20 percent of men. [2]<\/p><ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>Reclaim the space.<\/strong> If you\u2019re interrupted, calmly say, \u201cI\u2019d like to finish my point.\u201d<\/li><li><strong>Use \u201cbookending.\u201d<\/strong> Start with, \u201cHere\u2019s my perspective,\u201d and end with, \u201cI\u2019d love to hear your thoughts\u201d to keep control of the conversation.<\/li><li><strong>Own your expertise.<\/strong> Avoid phrases that dilute your impact, such as, \u201cI think,\u201d or \u201cI just wanted to add.\u201d<\/li><\/ul>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>2. How You Carry Yourself<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n<p>Body language and presence matter, but women often walk a tightrope between being \u201ctoo soft\u201d or \u201ctoo intimidating.\u201d The key is to own your space without overcompensating.<\/p><ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>Strong stance, steady voice.<\/strong> Plant your feet, sit or stand tall, and use measured gestures to signal authority without aggression.<\/li><li><strong>Pause for impact.<\/strong> Don\u2019t rush to fill silence. Pauses project confidence.<\/li><li><strong>Hold eye contact.<\/strong> Maintain your gaze when you\u2019re making your point.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>3. How You Handle Pressure<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n<p>Executive presence isn\u2019t about hiding your emotions. It\u2019s about being in control of how you express them.<\/p><ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>Pause before reacting.<\/strong> Saying, \u201cLet me think on that\u201d can buy you time.<\/li><li><strong>Lower, not louder.<\/strong> A steady, deeper voice carries more authority than raising your pitch.<\/li><li><strong>Center your focus. <\/strong>In high-pressure moments, shift your attention away from how you sound, look or are being perceived. Focus outward on the problem you\u2019re solving, people you\u2019re supporting, and the impact you want to have.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>4. How Visible You Are<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n<p>Many women fear that self-promotion will be seen negatively, but it\u2019s a key part of executive presence. [3] Done right, it elevates you and your team.<\/p><ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>Take the credit.<\/strong> If someone repeats your idea, say, \u201cThanks for building on the point I made earlier.\u201d\u200b<\/li><li><strong>Raise your hand.<\/strong> Strategically volunteer for high-profile projects. Don\u2019t wait to be invited.<\/li><li><strong>Find sponsors.<\/strong> A mentor gives advice; a sponsor advocates for you in rooms you\u2019re not in.\u200b<\/li><\/ul>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>5. How You Connect With Others<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n<p>Effective networking is about building trust with the right people.<\/p><ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>Be clear about the \u201cask.\u201d <\/strong>People generally want to help, but they need to know how. Be specific about what you need: a connection?
