Aim <\/h2>\n\n

This is a straightforward listening exercise suitable for all levels. Participants will learn the importance of verbal and non-verbal signals when communicating face-to-face and practice their own listening skills.<\/p>

Learning Objectives<\/h2>\n\n

You will be able to \u2026<\/p>

  • recognize the verbal and non-verbal signals a speaker portrays <\/li>
  • understand how a listener responds to a speaker to demonstrate they are listening <\/li><\/ul>\n\n

    What to Do (30 minutes)<\/h2>\n\n

    Introduce the topic with the key learning points, and divide the participants into groups of three. Allocate each individual in the group one of the roles: speaker, listener or observer, giving them a brief description of each role: <\/p>

    • The speaker <\/strong>should decide on a topic they can speak about for approximately five minutes. The exercise will work best if the topic is something that is important to them: their job, their family, a decision or a question. <\/li>
    • The listener\u2019s <\/strong>role is to practice their listening skills. They should use appropriate signals such as eye contact, body language, silences, verbal and non-verbal signals to show the speaker they are listening. Their verbal input should be as limited as possible. <\/li>
    • The observer <\/strong>should observe the listener’s verbal and non-verbal skills and count as many behaviors (eye contact, body language, verbal encouragement such as \u2018yes\u2019, or \u2018go on\u2019) and topic jumps as they can. They should attempt to be as accurate as possible and should also time the sessions to five minutes. <\/li><\/ul>

      After each session, ask the observer to share their observations with the group and invite discussion and questions. You may want to ask such questions as: <\/p>

      • What were the most common verbal prompts used by the listener? <\/li>
      • What were the most common non-verbal prompts used? <\/li>
      • Did you feel the listener was engaged with what you were saying? Why? <\/li>
      • Which listening skills were often missing from the interactions? <\/li>
      • Ask the listener to discuss the listening experience with the two other members of the group: What was comfortable? What was difficult? Did they stay with the speaker? <\/li>
      • Ask the speaker to share their feelings about the listener’s listening: Did they feel listened to? Was it helpful? Were they distracted by the listener at all? <\/li>
      • After this discussion is complete everyone should change places and repeat the process in different roles. <\/li><\/ul>\n\n

        Apply Learning (5 minutes)<\/h2>\n\n
        • Ask participants to highlight three main areas they feel they need to work on as a listener. Ask them to think up a rhyme, or acronym they can use to remember these points, so they can be applied in future communication scenarios. <\/li><\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
