Be specific about their leadership qualities. For example, do they:<\/p><ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>communicate a clear, compelling vision.<\/li><li>demonstrate a strategic mindset.<\/li><li>embrace innovation and digital or AI technologies.<\/li><li>motivate, encourage and inspire.<\/li><li>manage change effectively.<\/li><li>display emotional and cultural intelligence (especially for global, remote-first teams).<\/li><li>show creative problem-solving skills.<\/li><li>possess good people management, inclusive leadership, and communication skills.<\/li><li>have a commitment to sustainability and ESG goals.<\/li><li>embrace remote or hybrid ways of working.<\/li><\/ul><p>You can make the list very broad at first, then hone it down to a shortlist of what\u2019s important to be an effective leader in your organization.<\/p><p><strong>Take Action: <\/strong>on your template, write your shortlisted choices in column 1: <strong>Skills\/Behaviors\/Attributes<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Step 2: Identify Your Development Needs<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n<p>Take each skill, attribute or behavior and rate your current competency level. You could ask for input from colleagues, managers or clients, perhaps via a feedback questionnaire. They may highlight development needs that you\u2019re unaware of or avoiding.<\/p><p>Be open-minded and think wider. For example, if you see problem solving as a great leadership trait, don\u2019t limit ideas to immediate skills in this area. Think about adjacent skills and what you can do for different teams, like how you could nurture creativity in others.<\/p><p><strong>Take Action: <\/strong>write your <strong>Development Needs<\/strong> in column 2, alongside the relevant skill, attribute or behavior.<\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Step 3: Plan Your Actions and Activities<\/h2>\n\n<p>So, how are you going to meet these development needs? To plan your actions and activities, ask for help and advice from your learning and development team or a mentor.<\/p><p>Break things down to specific actions. For example, to develop your strategic thinking, you might need a deeper understanding of competitors. Actions could be carrying out competitor and market analysis.<\/p><p><strong>Take Action: <\/strong>write your actions in the <strong>Activities<\/strong> column and set a date for completion. You could also document the resources you might need and stakeholder involvement.<\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Step 4: Define What Success Looks Like<\/h2>\n\n<p>For each activity, detail a specific, clear and measurable success statement. <\/p><p>So, instead of, \u201cLearn more about John Kotter\u2019s Eight-Step Change Model,\u201d which sounds vague, make the action more purposeful. For example, \u201cFollow John Kotter\u2019s Eight-Step Change Model to shape how you communicate the department restructure in Q4.\u201d <\/p><p><strong>Take Action<\/strong>: note down your <strong>Success Statements<\/strong> alongside each action or activity.<\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Step 5: Keep Going! Review and Refine Your Plan<\/h2>\n\n<p>Your leadership development plan is a work in progress. At monthly or quarterly intervals, take time to review progress toward your success statements and your leadership development in general. Ask yourself:<\/p><ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Has the desired change taken place? How do I know? (You could ask your colleagues using a simple feedback form and consider giving them the option to make comments anonymously.)<\/li><li>What\u2019s worked well with my plan? What could have been better?<\/li><li>What tools and techniques have helped me and might develop my skills in other areas?
